Keith Henderson Wins $50,000 Cash Prize.
PR Newswire, Jan 14, 2002
BILOXI, Miss. — It was an evening fit for a King, as glitz, glamour and songs from the past hit the stage at Isle of Capri Casinos Inc. Biloxi, Mississippi resort property on Saturday. Keith Henderson of Chapel Hill, N.C. was awarded the Isle of Capri Casinos, Inc. $50,000 Tribute to the King prize following his performance with the real King’s actual band, the Jordanaires. The event was hosted to a sold-out crowd and honored the 67th birthday of the King and the 25th anniversary of his passing.
Henderson, 43, portrayed the King from the early ’70s. He says his impersonation is “always done in a positive light, never focusing on the negative.”
Henderson, who represented the Isle of Capri Casino Resort-Black Hawk, Co. in the contest, was cheered on to winning the cash prize by a large group of his fans and followers from around the country. When posed with the question as to what he plans to do with his winnings, Henderson immediately answered, “buy a tour bus!” As his family always accompanies him when traveling, they have been trying to save for a tour bus for over two years.
The contest, which brought together the creme de la creme of King impersonators from around the country, followed nationwide preliminary contests held at 11 Isle of Capri casinos earlier this year. Contestants were the best in the business, and have mastered the most intricate details of the King’s life, including his walk, talk and attire. Contestants’ experiences include television show debuts on MTV and “Married with Children,” film appearances in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” and “The Men Who Would Be King.” King contestants had also received recognition in Time and People magazines, and were previously featured on Good Morning America.
Contestants were judged on professionalism, appearance, sound, movement, overall replication of the King and overall acceptance from the audience. To enter, the contestants were required to submit a videotape of their performance, a one-page biography and an 8″x10″ photograph portraying the King.
